Launched for the first year by the European Commission, the European Capital of Smart Tourism competition took place in the summer of 2018. With 38 European cities competing, the Finnish capital was chosen as the winner together with France's Lyon. Through the Smart Tourism competition, EU aims to promote sustainable tourism as well as network and strengthen destinations.
Factors that were evaluated in choosing the winner included for example city image, accessibility, digitalisation in tourism services, as well as cultural heritage.
“Helsinki is showing the way internationally. Helsinki’s success in this competition was made possible by our reinforced image as an attractive and functional city destination", says Laura Aalto, CEO of Helsinki Marketing.
